Observer reporters honored

The N.C. Justice Center has honored a team of Observer reporters for their stories exposing workplace dangers in the nation's poultry industry.

At a ceremony in Durham on Thursday, the center presented a “Defenders of Justice” award to Observer reporters Ames Alexander, Kerry Hall, Franco Ordonez, Ted Mellnik and Peter St. Onge.

First presented in 1999, the “Defenders of Justice” awards are intended to honor those who have made significant contributions to the fight against poverty in North Carolina.

The Justice Center, a non-profit based in Raleigh, researches issues important to the state's low-income residents and serves as an advocate for the poor.
