A man who police say was breaking into cars in east Charlotte Thursday died after he was detained by citizens and later handcuffed by a police officer.
Officers identified the man as Spencer Scott Page, 33, of Matthews, but didn't release the name of the officer or the three other people involved. No one has been charged.
Witnesses told police that a man, later identified as Page, was breaking into cars on Uxbridge Woods Court, near Independence Boulevard and Briar Creek Road.
The owner of one of the vehicles noticed his doors open, went out to investigate and saw the suspect. The men began struggling and the suspect, armed with a screwdriver, began assaulting the car's owner, police said.

The car's owner screamed for help and two Charlotte sanitation workers who were nearby came to assist, police said. One of the employees restrained Page while the car's owner went inside to dial 911.
When a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer arrived, she put Page in handcuffs. When the people holding him down stepped away, the officer noticed that Page wasn't responsive, according to police. She removed the handcuffs and radioed for paramedics. Page died at Carolinas Medical Center.
No one was charged, but CMPD homicide detectives are conducting an investigation and will present their findings to the District Attorney's Office.
