Catawba County recently filled a new position at its animal shelter to focus on adoptions of animals.
Shelter kennels are crowded because officials try to keep animals as long as possible in hopes they'll be claimed or adopted. Rachel Johansen, the county's first animal services coordinator, will work to get the word out on adoptable animals.
Among Johansen's strategies are Internet postings, health checks of incoming animals, outreach to rescue groups that help with adoptions and oversight of shelter volunteers. She will also work to educate the public about responsible pet ownership.
