Man charged with DWI in cyclist death

A bicyclist crossing Central Avenue late Friday was killed after he was hit by a car operated by a man police say was driving drunk.

Police did not immediately release the dead man's identity because they had not located his family by Saturday evening. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene, near Central Avenue and North Sharon Amity Road.

Gregory Smith, who was driving a 2002 Chevrolet Impala with Pennsylvania license plates, was arrested and charged with driving while impaired. The car's owner, Torlando Craig, was sitting in the passenger seat when the collision happened and was later charged with aiding and abetting driving while impaired.

Smith and Craig, who both live in a south Charlotte apartment complex near Arrowood Road, were released from Mecklenburg jail around 9:30 a.m. Saturday. Their first court appearance is scheduled for Monday.

The wreck happened just after 11 p.m. Friday, says on a night when officers ramped up enforcement of DWI laws. Twelve people were arrested and charged with driving while impaired on South Boulevard. Police charged people with 66 other violations.
