Police probe woman's death

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are investigating the shooting death of a woman this afternoon in northeast Charlotte.

Police say the shooting happened shortly before 2 p.m.in the 1000 block of Franklin Avenue. That is in the Druid Hills South neighborhood, near North Graham Street.

Police Officer Robert Fey said an officer with the Highway Interdiction and Traffic Safety (HITS) unit was flagged down by the woman's boyfriend, who told the officer he was taking the victim to a hospital. The boyfriend also told the officer that he had shot the woman, police say.

The HITS officer escorted the boyfriend's vehicle to Presbyterian Hospital, but the woman died a short time after arrival.

Fey said the boyfriend is being cooperative and is being interviewed by detectives. He said it is not clear whether the shooting was accidental or intentional, but police also are interviewing neighbors who might have information.

Anyone with information in the case can speak to a CMPD detective by calling 704-432-8477, or they can call Crime Stoppers, 704-334-1600.
