Salisbury police officers Sunday morning fatally shot a man suspected in an armed robbery of a woman in a convenience store parking lot.
At 2:09 a.m., police were called to the Rushco convenience store at Jake Alexander Boulevard and Mooresville Road, where the victim reported she'd been robbed at gunpoint by four men who fled in a white Toyota Camry. She gave police a partial tag number and said the car had a broken window covered in plastic, police said.
Minutes later, police spotted the Toyota that fit that description at the Civic Apartments at 715 Hall St. As officers and a Rowan County sheriff's deputy knocked on an apartment door to the ask about the car, the suspect left through a rear door.
After one of the officers spoke to the man, he started running. The officer pursued him. But the suspect ran around a corner and toward other officers stationed in front.
Police say the suspect pulled a gun and started firing. Officers returned fire. The suspect died at the scene. As of Sunday afternoon, Salisbury police were not releasing names. The State Bureau of Investigation was called in to investigate.
