More than 60,000 Mecklenburg County kids cast ballots Tuesday in the Kids Voting election.
With 75 percent of the vote counted, the students favored Democratic Sen. Barack Obama for president, Democrat Kay Hagan for the U.S. Senate and Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory for governor.
The number of votes topped the 42,000 ballots kids cast in 2004.
Kids Voting Mecklenburg is a nonpartisan program educating students about civic participation. Kids are able to vote at real polling sites or online.
Of those casting ballots, 17,000 voted online, and 45,000 voted early.
