Hundreds of Mecklenburg County athletes took a victory lap Tuesday at opening ceremonies for the annual Special Olympics.
The ceremonies took place at Bojangles’ Coliseum, amid plenty of pomp and cheers.
The competition begins Wednesday at Charlotte Country Day School and the Mecklenburg Aquatic Center.

Charlotte Country Day annually suspends classes for two days at its Upper School, and students and faculty members serve as buddies for the athletes. The competition at Charlotte Country Day, open to the public, is scheduled for 10 a.m. until about 1 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday. Steve Lyttle
