Weekend closures

Portions of several major Charlotte roads will be closed at times this weekend for construction.

The N.C. Department of Transportation said Idlewild Road will be closed from 8 p.m. Friday until 6 a.m. Monday between Independence Boulevard and Cedars East Court. This is part of the Independence Freeway conversion project.

Construction on the light rail extension in north Charlotte will mean the weekend closure of the right northbound lane of North Tryon Street between Harris Boulevard and J.M. Keynes Drive; the right westbound lane of Harris Boulevard approaching North Tryon Street; and the left eastbound turn lane from Harris Boulevard to North Tryon Street.

Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard will be closed between Church and Mint streets from noon-6 p.m. Saturday. Crews will be removing a tower crane at the South Mint Street apartment building.

The intersection of Tom Hunter Road and North Tryon Street will be closed from tonight until Monday afternoon and again next weekend so crews can move underground utilities. The closure is scheduled from 6 p.m. tonight until 4 p.m. Monday.

The work is related to construction of the light rail line's northern extension from uptown to UNC Charlotte. Traffic on North Tryon Street will be maintained, but motorists who want to use Tom Hunter Road will have to detour on Arrowhead Drive and Elgywood Lane.
