Storm batters Statesville area and roars through other Charlotte-area counties

A strong thunderstorm roared through Iredell and several other Charlotte-area counties Friday afternoon, blowing down trees and power lines in the Statesville area.

A tornado warning was issued for parts of Iredell, Davie and Rowan counties, but it wasn’t clear Friday night whether a tornado or thunderstorm winds were responsible for the damage.

The cluster of storms was part of a larger outbreak of severe weather, with several reports of tornadoes in Eastern North Carolina.

The worst of the damage in Iredell appeared to be about 5 miles northwest of Statesville. A National Weather Service spotter reported garage doors blown in and siding ripped off homes.

There also were reports of wind damage near downtown Statesville, near Stony Point in Alexander County and on Needmore Road in northwest Rowan County.

No injuries were reported.

Forecasters say mostly clear skies are expected for the weekend, with afternoon high temperatures around 80 degrees both Saturday and Sunday.
