Gastonia Police make arrest in hit-and-run death of pedestrian

Gastonia Police have made an arrest in the hit-and-run death of a pedestrian on April 18.

Authorities said on Saturday that Jerry Kent Orrell, 31, the driver of a white SUV, turned himself in to police and has been cooperating with the investigation.

After authorities met with the District Attorney, Orrell was charged with second degree murder, felony hit and run, driving while license revoked and careless and reckless driving, police said.

According to police, Orrell’s 1997 Ford Explorer was located in the Food Lion parking lot on Mount Holly Huntersville Road.

Police said that on April 18 John Wayne King, 53, of Gastonia was walking south in the crosswalk at East Long Avenue and Broad Street when he was struck by a white SUV and then by a small sedan, possibily a Toyota. He was struck at about 7:50 p.m. Both drivers left traveling east on East Long Avenue, police said.

King died of his injuries on Thursday.
