Matthews police say portions of Sam Newell Road and East Independence Boulevard that were closed for several hours Thursday morning are open again.
Matthews police Officer Tim Aycock said crews completed work from a fuel spill before 11:30 a.m.
Crews at the scene said the driver of a tractor-trailer headed westbound on East Independence Boulevard heard a popping sound under his truck. He turned left onto Sam Newell Road and pulled to the side.
One of the truck’s fuel tanks was leaking, so police closed Sam Newell Road between Independence Boulevard and Independence Pointe Parkway. The left turn lane from Independence Boulevard to Sam Newell Road also was closed.
The Charlotte Fire Department’s Hazmat crew and the Matthews Fire Department helped clear the problem.
