1 killed, 3 injured in Independence Boulevard wreck

One motorist was killed and three others were injured in a wreck on Independence Boulevard on Sunday night.

Police identified the deceased as 25-year-old Barnette White Jr., who was ejected from the backseat of a 1999 Toyota 4Runner when a 1998 Saturn struck the SUV from behind. White was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The driver of the Saturn, 28-year-old Daniel Lewis Roberts, suffered serious injuries and was charged with a DWI at the hospital.

Upon release, Roberts will be charged with felony death by vehicle, reckless driving and expired registration plate, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said.

The crash occurred shortly before 7:30 p.m. The 4Runner was making a right onto Independence Boulevard from Village Lake Drive during a yellow light when the Saturn struck it.

“The Toyota then slid out of control and overturned,” a CMPD statement says. “The Saturn continued to slide down the road before turning sideways and striking a telephone pole.”

The 4Runner driver, Scott Lee Guess Howard III, and front-seat passenger, Jie Brandon Johnson, both 24, were taken to Carolinas Medical Center with minor injuries.

CMPD is investigating the accident and asks that any witnesses call Detective Matt Sammis at 704-336-8862.
