Officials are telling more than a dozen people near Asheville that it may take months before it’s again safe to breathe the air in their homes.
The Asheville Citizen-Times reports that officials now think the people near an Asheville-area Superfund site will be out of their homes for much longer than previously believed. Results from tests taken in April found unsafe levels in the air of the cancer-causing chemical trichloroethylene, or TCE.
Their soil and groundwater have high concentrations of chemicals used at a neighboring electronic components factory closed decades ago.
Friday’s advice that neighbors leave their homes right away was a sudden development for residents who have been pushing for action for years. A U.S. Supreme Court ruling expected this month could decide whether they can sue. Associated Press
