Police: One dead in east Charlotte traffic accident

A motorist was killed and his passenger seriously injured after their car hit a tree in east Charlotte on Sunday, Police Capt. J.D. Thomas said.

Yoan Alberto Hernandez Tosca, 24, was taken to Carolinas Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead. His passenger, Rangel Garcia Cabrera, 30, was seriously injured and also taken to the hospital.

About 1:10 p.m., firefighters and law enforcement responded to the accident, at Winter Haven Drive and Albemarle Road.

The car, a white 2003 Honda Accord, was heading inbound on Albemarle Road and traveling at a high speed. It started to weave in and out of vehicles that were traveling in the same direction. After passing several cars, Tosca started to lose control of the car. He over-corrected and began to slide sideways, said police.

The vehicle slid off the right side of the road and struck a large tree, police said.

Both occupants were wearing seat belts at the time of crash. Speed is a factor in the crash. It is unknown whether alcohol also played a role, police said.

“It’s still under investigation,” said Thomas.

The accident caused significant traffic delays. About 4 p.m., the debris from the road had been removed, said Thomas.

Any witnesses to this crash are being asked to call Detective Kevin Allred at 704-432-2169.
