A 50-year-old man was critically injured Friday when his moped hit a curb and crashed at North Main Street and a connector road that leads to Walmart, police said.

The single-vehicle wreck happened between 6 and 6:30 a.m., police said.

The man was wearing a novelty helmet not approved by the Department of Transportation, police said.

He was transported to CaroMont Regional Medical Center in Gastonia.
