Sawmills mayor indicted on forgery charges

The mayor of Sawmills, a small town in Caldwell County, has been indicted on 12 felony counts of forgery and uttering.

Authorities say he forged his father’s name on 12 checks worth nearly $12,000.

The News-Topic of Lenior reports that Sawmills Mayor William Robert “Bob” Gibbs III said he regrets spending money from his father’s bank account on himself.

Gibbs told the newspaper that he and his brother have power of attorney on the account.

Investigators say the brother called police after noticing the checks.

Gibbs says he is going to try to work things out with his family. Associated Press
