Today’s traffic: School’s 2nd day, president’s visit

The usual problems with collisions and congestion will be only part of the headaches facing Charlotte-area motorists today.

It’s the second day of classes for many public school students in the area, and that means another morning of buses picking up children and heavy traffic around schools. The first week or two of the academic year typically produce the biggest school-related congestion.

A Charlotte-Mecklenburg high school student was struck and seriously injured by a car Monday morning on Beatties Ford Road, and that is a reminder to motorists to use extra caution – not only in school zones, but anyplace where students might be walking.

The other big issue Tuesday will be President Barack Obama’s visit. The president will arrive in Charlotte around 11 a.m. and leave sometime after 1 p.m., following a speaking engagement at the Charlotte Convention Center.

A list of probable traffic tie-ups related to the president’s visit is below.

Meanwhile, a number of wrecks are being reported in the area, including a crash involving a motorcycle on northbound Interstate 77 in Huntersville. There also is a crash on northbound I- 85 in west Charlotte and on southbound I- 77 near Arrowood Road.

Here is the traffic summary at 9 a.m.:
