Shoes may be clue in Food Lion robbery, beating

Two men who robbed a Food Lion in Monroe and beat an employee on Sunday had their faces and bodies covered, but police hope sneakers that showed up on surveillance footage will provide a clue.

The store on Sunset Drive was robbed as the assistant manager opened it around 6:30 a.m., said Peter Hovanec, spokesman for the city of Monroe. Two armed men wearing ski masks and black clothes were captured on video.

“Please pay attention to the first suspect’s shoes,” Havanec said in an email, sending a still photo that shows one man wearing white sneakers with black stripes.

The assistant manager was pistol-whipped; he was treated for injuries that were not life-threatening, Hovanec said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Monroe police at 704-282-4700.
