The Rev. Clifford Jones Sr. of Charlotte’s Friendship Missionary Baptist Church lost his bid Thursday to become the next president of the National Baptist Convention.
Meeting in New Orleans at the denomination’s 134th annual meeting, delegates instead elected the Rev. Jerry Young of Jackson, Miss., to a five-year term. Young, who was convention vice president, beat four others to lead the country’s largest black religious group. Tim Funk
