Shelby man arrested in marijuana-growing case

Shelby police arrested a YMCA board member last week who is accused of growing marijuana on the Dover YMCA’s property.

Drew Alexander Beam, 46, was arrested last Friday on charges of misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance and felony manufacturing a controlled substance. He is free on a $2,500 unsecured bond. Beam resigned his volunteer post, YMCA officials said.

Police confirmed two marijuana plants were found on land “that is not in close proximity to our facility,” said Cameron Corder, CEO of the Cleveland County Family YMCA. Erin Bacon, Joe Marusak
