Pregnant woman killed, 2nd woman seriously injured in Belmont accident

A pregnant woman and her unborn baby were killed and another woman suffered life-threatening injuries in an early morning accident in Belmont on Sunday.

The accident happened when their vehicle went off the road and crashed into the Exit 27 sign while leaving southbound Interstate 85 South.

The passenger, Heather D. Lochard, 21, of Kernersville, later died at Caromont Regional Medical Center. She was was seven months pregnant, and her baby also died.

The driver of the vehicle, Brenda G. Parrish, 55, of Bessemer City, suffered serious injuries and was taken to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. She was listed in critical condition on Sunday.

Two toddlers were in the back seat of the car. The children were taken to Caromont Regional Medical Center. One of the children suffered a broken wrist. Both children were in car seats at the time of the crash.

Officials said they didn’t know what caused the accident. The North Carolina Highway Patrol was assisting the Belmont Police Department in its investigation.
