Searchers end hunt for man in Lake Norman

Authorities stopped a search late Sunday for a man who was missing in Lake Norman. Rescuers were called to Belle Isle Drive in Cornelius about 8 p.m. and were searching for the man, in his 30s, who went into the water from a boat and then disappeared. Chief Jim Barbee of the Cornelius-Lemley Fire Department said seven people were on the boat.

Diana Garcia said she was celebrating her mother’s birthday when partygoers saw three people bobbing in the water near Belle Isle Drive. One was rescued by a boater, she said, and another by authorities.

A rescuer told Garcia that a man had lost his hat and went into the water to retrieve it. He wasn’t wearing a life jacket and went underwater. They planned to resume searching on Monday. Cleve R. Wootson Jr.
