Road construction projects are scheduled to begin this morning on two uptown Charlotte streets and on a road in western Union County.
Charlotte transportation officials say Eighth and Ninth streets will be closed for six months between North College and North Brevard streets. The closure, scheduled to begin at 9 a.m., is needed for construction of the light rail line extension.
A detour route has been posted.
Meanwhile, the N.C. Department of Transportation will close Stevens Mill Road in Stallings for about five months to replace the bridge over North Fork Crooked Creek. This closes Stevens Mill Road to through traffic between Stallings and Idlewild roads.
The posted detour uses Stallings and Idlewild roads. The new bridge is scheduled for completion by Feb. 4.
Otherwise, there are problems with collisions and disabled vehicles scattered around the Charlotte area. And congestion is slowing traffic in several spots.
