Police: No threat from ‘suspicious device’ found at CMC

A suspicious item found near the entrance of the Children’s Emergency Room at Carolinas Medical Center on Thursday night temporarily rerouted patients to another nearby hospital, but police have since said the item posed no threat to public safety.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Bomb Squad Unit was called to 1000 Blythe Ave. shortly after 9 p.m. after hospital security found “a suspicious item” and called 911.

As bomb squad technicians investigated the item, incoming ER patients were sent to Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center as a precaution, police said.

No injuries were reported, and CMC was reopened after bomb squad techs said the item was not a threat.

Police have not yet said what the item was or how long they remained on the scene, though investigators said more details could be released.
