Today’s traffic: Slow travel on interstates

A wreck that caused traffic backups earlier Tuesday morning on northbound Interstate 77 at the state line has been cleared, but it’s still a slow commute for many motorists south of Charlotte.

The I-77 wreck, at Carowinds Boulevard, caused slowdowns extending about 3 miles. All travel lanes were reopened around 8:40 a.m., but it will take awhile for the regular traffic flow to resume.

Traffic is also very slow on both the inner and outer loops of I-485 in southern Mecklenburg County, and Johnston Road is badly clogged on the approach to I-485.

Center City

East Fourth Street at Charlottetowne Avenue ... Collision; moderate delays.


I-77 southbound, Lake Norman area ... Congestion; traffic moving 15-25 mph from Brawley School Road (Exit 35) down to Gilead Road (Exit 23).

I-85 southbound, north Charlotte ... Collision near Sugar Creek Road; traffic moving 15-25 mph from Harris Boulevard to the wreck scene.


I-485 inner loop, south Mecklenburg ... Congestion; traffic moving 15-25 mph from Providence Road to I-77.

I-485 outer loop, south Mecklenburg ... Congestion and construction-related delays; traffic moving 15-25 mph from I-77 to N.C. 51.

Independence Boulevard inbound ... Congestion; traffic moving 20-25 mph from Eastway Drive to uptown.

Johnston Road ... Congestion; traffic moving 15-25 mph northbound from the state line to I-485.

Providence Road inbound ... Congestion; traffic moving 15-25 mph from the Arboretum area to Wendover Road.

Monroe Road at McAlway Road ... Collision; moderate delays.


I-77 northbound, south Charlotte ... Congestion; traffic moving 25-35 mph from Carowinds Boulevard up to Clanton Road.

Brown-Grier Road at Sandy Poter Road ... Collision with injuries; moderate to heavy delays.

Gaston County

U.S. 321, Gaston County ... Congestion; traffic moving 15-25 mph in each direction between I-85 and Dallas-Cherryville Highway.

Cabarrus County

U.S. 29, between Mecklenburg-Cabarrus line and speedway ... Construction until Dec. 15, with crews adding a median and reducing traffic from six to five lanes. Daytime lane closures expected.

York County

I-77 northbound ... Earlier wreck cleared near Carowinds Boulevard; traffic moving 30-35 mph from Gold Hill Road to the state line.
