Hurricane Hugo roared onto the South Carolina coast on Sept. 21, 1989, and raced inland, leaving a path of destruction from Charleston through Charlotte and across the North Carolina mountains. Hugo’s passage through Charlotte is etched vividly in the memories of anyone who lived here at the time.
