Symphony plays free uptown Charlotte concert Friday

The Charlotte Symphony will perform in concert Friday night at uptown Charlotte’s Romare Bearden Park, and there will be no admission charge.

The evening also will include a Chow Down Uptown food truck rally, featuring 11 food trucks, at 5 p.m. and a screening of “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” at 9:30 p.m.

The concert is planned for 8 p.m., featuring an “Americana” theme. The Charlotte Symphony performed at Bearden Park in June, and orchestra officials said they were happy with the public reception.

“Bearden Park is a beautiful and vibrant venue, and we truly enjoyed performing there in June,” assistant conductor Roger Kalia said.

The lineup will include Copland’s “Saturday Night Waltz” and “Hoe-Down”; Wendel’s arrangement of “A Hollywood Salute”; a Duke Ellington medley; and selections from Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess.”
