Health departments offer free preparedness potassium iodide Saturday

Free preparedness potassium iodide (KI) will be available Saturday to residents who live within the 10-mile Emergency Planning Zones of McGuire and Catawba Nuclear Stations, according to officials.

The health departments in Mecklenburg, Catawba, Gaston, Iredell and Lincoln counties will distribute the over-the-counter medication 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the following locations:

• Mecklenburg County

North Mecklenburg High School, 11201 Old Statesville Road, Huntersville.

Southwest Middle School, 13624 Steele Creek Road, Charlotte.

• Gaston County

Forestview High School, 5545 Union Road, Gastonia.

Pinewood Elementary School, 1925 N. Main St., Mount Holly.

• Lincoln County

East Lincoln Community Center, 8160 Optimist Club Road, Denver.

• Catawba County

Sherrills Ford-Terrell Fire and Rescue, 4011 Slanting Bridge Road, Sherrills Ford.

• Iredell County

Woodland Heights Elementary School, 288 Forest Lake Blvd., Mooresville.

Pine Lake Preparatory, 1639 Mecklenburg Highway, Mooresville (off N.C. 115, south of Mount Mourne Volunteer Fire Department).

Officials say that if the proper dose is taken within a certain time, the pills can help protect the thyroid from absorbing radioactive iodine during a nuclear power plant emergency.

The KI tablets should only be taken when instructed by emergency officials and will also be available at respective health departments after the distribution event.
