St. Augustine’s football player killed in Georgia crash

A member of the football team at Saint Augustine’s University in Raleigh was killed Monday morning in a head-on crash in coastal Georgia, authorities said.

The victim was identified as Matthew Mangram, 20, a junior who was majoring in criminal justice. Mangram was an offensive lineman with the university’s football team.

The McIntosh County Sheriff’s Office said the crash was reported about 7:30 a.m. on U.S. 17, near the McIntosh County EMS station. Mangram was driving a Nissan Sentra southbound that struck a northbound Ford Explorer driven by a woman who was taking her daughter to school, authorities said.

Mangram and the two occupants of the SUV were from Darien, Ga., authorities said.

The cause of the wreck was under investigation, but rain had been falling during the morning in the area.

Mangram died at the scene. The occupants of the Ford Explorer were taken to a hospital in Brunswick, Ga., then transferred to a hospital in Savannah. There was no word on their condition Monday afternoon.

Saint Augustine’s University issued a statement from athletics director George Williams, who said, “It is always hard and difficult to lose a family member, but to lose a young man in the prime of his life like Matthew, who was an honor student and a starter on the football team, is almost unspeakable.”

The university held a memorial for Mangram at the chapel early Monday afternoon.
