Southbound (inbound) lanes of North Tryon Street over Mallard Creek are now closed for about seven months, so crews can replace the bridge.
Crews closed the lanes on Wednesday.
Traffic will be detoured during the closure, which is part of a $4.4 million contract to replace two bridges on North Tryon The bridge replacements are tied to construction of the light-rail line to UNC Charlotte, according to the N.C. Department of Transportation.
Until the new southbound bridge is completed in May, inbound traffic will be detoured on Mallard Creek Church Road, Interstate 85 and Harris Boulevard back to North Tryon.
When the bridge is completed, the northbound bridge will close, and the southbound bridge will handle two-way traffic. Steve Lyttle
