All lanes are open again on southbound Interstate 85 in northern Mecklenburg County, following a wreck earlier Saturday evening that had shut down a portion of the highway.
A multi-vehicle crash was reported about 7:45 p.m. on southbound I-85 near the I-485 interchange. The N.C. Highway Patrol closed all southbound lanes for nearly an hour, detouring traffic onto Bruton Smith Boulevard, U.S. 29, and Mallard Creek Church Road back to I-85.
Injuries were reported in the wreck, but information on the victims was not available Saturday evening.
The N.C. Department of Transportation said all southbound lanes were reopened about 9:45 p.m.
An earlier wreck was reported on southbound I-85 near the Sugar Creek Road intersection. That collision caused several miles of backups, but lanes were reopened by 7:30 p.m. – just in time for the wreck farther north on the highway.
Another serious wreck Saturday night was reported on Monroe Road, near Richland Drive, midway between Sharon Amity and Wendover roads. Medic said one person with potentially life-threatening injuries was taken from that wreck to Carolinas Medical Center.
All lanes were reopened on Monroe Road around 8:15 p.m.
