Power has been restored to more than 24,000 customers in Mecklenburg and Union counties after an outage at a substation Wednesday morning.
The outages affected customers of Union Power Cooperative and Duke Energy, largely in central and western Union County. That includes Monroe, Mineral Springs, Waxhaw and Weddington.
Service had been restored to the vast majority of customers by 11 a.m., though the number of outages kept fluctuating on Union Power's website. Around 12:15 p.m., just under 200 outages were reported.
Union County Schools said the outage had affected about 15 of its campuses, but district officials said schools would not dismiss early. "Lunch will be served and instruction will continue," the school district said on it Facebook account. "We are in constant communication with Duke Power to monitor this situation."
The outage also darkened traffic signals, and emergency officials in Union urged people to use extreme caution when approaching intersections.
