Panthers, Hornets cause uptown congestion

Preparation for pregame partying connected with the Carolina Panthers’ Thursday night football game created traffic troubles Wednesday morning, and more of the same is likely Thursday.

Wednesday morning’s problems developed with the closure of South Mint Street near Bank of America Stadium.

South Mint Street between Graham and Morehead streets will be closed until 6 a.m. Friday for a street festival planned from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday before the Panthers’ game against New Orleans.

The road closure means motorists heading toward uptown on West Morehead Street cannot use Mint Street to reach parking lots and decks. Instead, they must use South Tryon or South College streets.

A similar problem is likely Thursday morning.

In addition, a tailgate party is planned for 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday on Levine Avenue of the Arts. That road will be closed between Tryon and Church streets for the party.
