A Bessemer City teenager died after she was struck Tuesday morning by a car after she walked onto Dallas-Cherryville Highway near Costner Elementary School in Gaston County, authorities said.
Julie Coleman, 18, was struck by a burgundy Toyota. The impact sent Coleman’s body into the westbound lane, where she was then struck by a Ford Astro van and a Gaston County police car that couldn’t avoid her, Trooper Kasey Cornwell of the N.C. Highway Patrol said. Coleman most likely died immediately when the Toyota struck her, the trooper said.
Cornwell said the driver of Toyota never saw Coleman because she was wearing all black clothing and had a black helmet on. No charges are expected to be filed, the trooper said.
Cornwell said it’s unknown why Coleman walked onto the road or why she was in the area.
