Man hit by car, injured near Providence High

A man was hospitalized with leg injuries Tuesday morning after being struck by a car on Pineville-Matthews Road near Providence High School in southeast Charlotte.

The incident caused considerable confusion initially, as the victim had been identified as a pedestrian, and there were reports that the man was a student.

But police and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools officials confirmed that the man was a 20-year-old.

According to police, the series of events began about 6:40 a.m. with a vehicular collision near Echo Forest Drive. One of the drivers involved in the wreck got out of his car on Pineville-Matthews Road and was struck by another vehicle.

The incident happened while students were arriving for class at Providence High, and police were forced to close the road for a time.

Medic said the victim was taken to Novant Presbyterian Hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries. Police are still investigating the incident.
