Numerous wrecks across Charlotte region

Motorists leaving on Thanksgiving trips and other evening commuters in Charlotte area having a tough time Wednesday evening, due to congestion, collisions and disabled vehicles.

A number of wrecks are being reported in the Charlotte region, and traffic is slow on nearly all major roads.

Some of the slowest traffic is on Interstate 85 northbound in Cabarrus County and on I-85 southbound in Gaston and Cleveland counties.

Here is the 6:35 p.m. traffic update:

I-77

Southbound ... Congestion slowing traffic to about 35 mph from Nations Ford Road to I-485.

I-85

Northbound ... Congestion near Poplar Tent Road, with average speeds of 20-25 mph.

Southbound ... Congestion between Sam Wilson Road (Exit 29) and mile marker 25. Average speeds of 20-30 mph.

Congestion between N.C. 161 (Exit 8) and Dixon School Road (Exit 5) in Gaston and Cleveland counties. Average speeds of 30 mph.

I-485

Outer loop ... Heavy congestion from I-77 to Rea Road.

East Charlotte

Numerous intersections ... Traffic signals out in several locations due to power outage.

North Charlotte, north Meck

North Brevard Street at Brookshire Freeway ... Disabled vehicle; moderate delays.

Southeast Charlotte

Sharon Amity Road, south of Independence Boulevard ... Pedestrian struck; moderate delays.

Southwest Charlotte

Westinghouse Road at South Tryon Street ... Collision; moderate delays.

West Charlotte

None.

Union County

Lawyers Road at Mill Grove Road ... Hit-and-run collision; moderate delays.
