The driver of a 2008 Toyota Yaris died Wednesday when his vehicle went off Mallard Creek Road in the University area and struck a tree, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said.
Montel Alonzo Bullock, 19, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
The preliminary investigation shows that the vehicle ran off the right side of the road about 6 a.m., traveled a short distance on the shoulder and struck the tree, police Detective R.C. Gormican said.
Alcohol doesn’t appear to have been a factor, Gormican said.

It is unknown whether speed and the weather contributed to the crash, the officer said. It was raining at the time.
No passenger was in the car, and no other vehicles appear to have been involved, Gormican said.
Anyone with information about the wreck is asked to call CMPD’s Major Crash Investigation Unit at 704-432-2169.
