Caldwell’s DSS director to retire

Joyce Edwards, who has headed the department of social services in Caldwell County for more than nine years, is retiring Dec. 31, county officials said.

Edwards, who has worked for Caldwell’s social services department for 31 years, has held the post since replacing Sam Haithcock in July 2005.

She is a Wilkes County native who graduated from Western Carolina University in 1978. She came to work with Caldwell’s social services department in May 1983 as a foster care social worker.

Her husband, Barry Edwards, is director of utilities and engineering in Catawba County. The couple lives in Hickory.

Caldwell County officials said they expect to name a replacement within a few days.
