Today’s traffic: Congestion slows interstates

Congestion is the biggest problem for motorists in the Charlotte region at 8:10 a.m. Thursday.

Heavy traffic volume means slow travel speeds on both the inner and outer loops of Interstate 485 in south Mecklenburg, on I-77 southbound from Davidson to Huntersville, and on inbound Johnston Road in the Ballantyne area.

An earlier wreck that slowed inbound East Independence Boulevard has been cleared, but traffic remains sluggish.

Here is the 8:10 a.m. update:


I-77 southbound, Lake Norman area ... Congestion; traffic moving 10-20 mph from Griffith Street in Davidson (Exit 30) to Gilead Road (Exit 23).

McCoy Road at Beatties Ford Road ... Collision; minor delays.


Albemarle Road inbound ... Congestion; traffic moving 15-25 mph from Lawyers Road to Sharon Amity Road.


I-485 inner loop, south Mecklenburg ... Congestion; traffic moving 25-35 mph from Providence Road to I-77.

I-485 outer loop, south Mecklenburg ... Congestion and construction-related delays. Traffic moving 15-25 mph from I-77 to Rea Road.

Independence Boulevard inbound ... Congestion; traffic moving 15-25mph from Sharon Amity Road to uptown.

Johnston Road ... Heavy congestion; traffic moving 10-15 mph northbound from the state line to I-485.

Providence Road inbound ... Congestion; traffic moving 20-25 mph from the Arboretum area to Wendover Road.

Rea Road at Pineville-Matthews Road ... Hit-and-run collision; moderate delays.


I-77 northbound, south Charlotte ... Congestion; traffic moving 25-35 mph from Carowinds Boulevard up to Clanton Road.


Billy Graham Parkway ... Congestion and a wreck at Tyvola Road; traffic moving 20-25 mph along the entire roadway.

Little Rock Road at I-85 ... Collision with injuries; moderate delays.

Tyvola Road at I-77 southbound ... Disabled vehicle; minor delays.

Union County

U.S. 74 westbound ... Congestion from Rocky River Road to I-485, through Indian Trail and Stallings; traffic moving 15-20 mph.
