Cigarette blamed for Hickory fire

Hickory firefighters blame an unattended smoldering cigarette for an early morning fire Tuesday that extensively damaged a home at 940 27th St. NE No. 110.

Firefighters who arrived shortly after 4:30 a.m. reported smoke coming from the home. They said all of the the occupants had made it safely outside.

The occupants told firefighters that a smoke alarm alerted them to the fire.
