Black ice in Durham causes crashes, road closing

Authorities closed the southbound side of South Miami Boulevard in Durham between General Electric Drive and Patriot Drive shortly after 7 a.m. Wednesday because of black ice that had formed on the pavement and crashes involving 11 vehicles.

The ice resulted as winter-like temperatures returned to the Triangle and froze water flowing over the pavement.

Police said 11 vehicles were reported to have been involved in accidents.

The state Department of Transportation reported that the southbound side of the road could be closed for several hours.

Emergency workers were dispatched to the area, but police said there did not appear to be any serious injuries.
