Plunging into the new year

Competitors from throughout the United States and Canada competed Thursday in the 37th annual Lake Norman New Year’s Day Barefoot Challenge.

The event was hosted by the Carolina Show Ski Team and included men’s, women’s and juniors’ divisions. Skiers earn points based on the length of their run and bonus points for stunts and tricks completed both at the start and during the run.

Making the competition more difficult is the course in Mundy Creek cove, where Lake Norman Marina is located. Little time is spent waiting for water conditions to calm between runs, and the tight oval keeps the action close to spectators and makes performing tricks more difficult.
