Charlotte traffic: Gas leak closes inbound Eastway Drive south of East Sugar Creek Road

Emergency responders have closed inbound Eastway Drive south of East Sugar Creek Road because of a gas leak.

The lanes were closed at about 8:30 a.m. Friday.

Earlier Friday, a driver who police said had consumed alcohol was seriously injured when his car hit an unoccupied vehicle on the side of Interstate 85, near the Graham Street exit, Observer news partner WBTV reported.

The wreck happened at about 3:15 a.m. All lanes reopened shortly after 5 a.m., according to the state Department of Transportation.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have responded to several collisions since 8:30 a.m., including an injury wreck on East Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard at South McDowell Street.

Wrecks also were reported on Mount Holly Road at Hilton Drive, on Sunset Road at Banner Elk Drive, on Sharon Road at Runnymede Lane and on Ardrey Kell Road at Providence Row Lane.
