Lab confirms Caldwell County’s only rabies case of 2014

A state lab has confirmed Caldwell County’s only rabies case of 2014, in a raccoon that fought with a dog outside a home in Granite Falls on Dec. 30.

The North Carolina State Laboratory of Public Health notified Caldwell County Animal Control on Jan. 2 of the positive rabies test. The raccoon was euthanized after the fight.

The dog wasn’t current on its rabies vaccinations, Animal Control Director Greg Greene said Thursday.

Animal Control is waiting for the dog’s owner to decide whether to quarantine the dog for six months or have it euthanized, as per state law, Greene said.
