Co-workers were unable to rescue a man who fell in a grain bin late Saturday morning and suffocated, Union County Sheriff’s Lt. Robert Rollins said.
The apparent job-related accident happened at Baucom Services, a repair shop for trucks, trailers and related equipment at 9611 Morgan Mill Rd. in Union County, Rollins said.
“It’s a repair shop, but he’s a big farmer and has got grain bins there,” he said. “We were told the gentlemen fell somehow into the grain bin and the others working there weren’t able to rescue him in time. By the time the call came in, he had already become entrapped in the grain bin.”
By Saturday night, the victim’s relatives had been contacted, but his name had not been released. Rollins said it probably won’t be until Sunday.

He said an investigator from the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration was due Sunday to begin investigating the incident.
In addition to rescuers, medical examiner Crystal Gillespie also responded to the scene, Rollins said.
