Officials look for man believed to have drowned in Union park

Union County officials searched Sunday for a man they believe drowned in a lake at Cane Creek Park on Friday.

A couple in their 30s were fishing Friday in a canoe at the park in Waxhaw when the husband stood up in the boat and it capsized, said Union County spokesman Brett Vines.

The woman was able to swim to shore and call 911 just before 1 p.m. Friday. But her husband never resurfaced, Vines said. The couples’ names have not been released.

“She swam to the campground area, so it was in the vicinity of the campground,” Vines said. He added that the deepest point of the lake is 80 feet, and water temperatures hover around 40 degrees during this time of year.

As far as he knows, Vines said, alcohol was not involved.

Rescue crews and dive teams spent several hours each day over the weekend searching the lake. On Sunday, the Charlotte Fire Department visited the lake with its sonar technology to help in the search, Vines said.

The Union County Sheriff’s Office, Union County Emergency Management and the Red Cross were also on-site to offer support and assistance, Vines said.

Vines said officials hoped to search the entire 350-acre lake by day’s end on Sunday.

He said the water has been relatively calm during the search and the weather has been sunny.
