Morning commute: Crashes, injuries reported; flooding halts traffic on Providence

Motorists were battling rainfall, flooding and road delays as traffic backed up and crashes mounted on some major Charlotte roadways early Monday.

Standing water escalated into minor flooding on Providence Road inbound approaching South Wendover Road, resulting in traffic delays.

Road closures were reported on North Tryon Street, Idlewild Road and East 36th Street.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police reported more than 30 crashes in the city by 8:15 a.m. One crash at East Independence Boulevard and Hawthorne Lane resulted in injuries, while another injury was reported in a Steele Creek hit-and-run on John Price Road at South Tryon Street.

A Maserati that crashed into a power pole closed outbound lanes on West Fourth Street.

Two lanes were closed on Independence Boulevard between Sharon Amity and Briar Creek roads due to an accident, resulting in stop-and-go traffic, according to WBTV, the Observer’s news partner.

Injuries were reported in two crashes on Interstate 485, one on the interstate’s inner loop at Johnston Road and another on the outer loop at Rocky River Road.

Officials also reported a crash on I-77/General Younts Freeway in Pineville.

In South Carolina, troopers reported a crash on S.C. 49 in Lake Wylie.

Several planned, longstanding construction projects were expected to result in traffic congestion and delays along I-77, I-85 and I-485, according to the N.C. Department of Transportation.
