Test shows harmless white powder in suspicious letter sent to Samaritan’s Purse

The FBI said Monday that preliminary lab test results show the white power in a suspicious letter sent to the Boone headquarters of Samaritan’s Purse was not toxic.

Still, the investigation is continuing, FBI spokeswoman Shelley Lynch said in an email. And the federal agency is working with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service to determine who sent the letter and why.

The letter was received Friday at the main office of the charity, which is run by evangelist Franklin Graham, who also leads the Charlotte-based Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.

The letter and its contents were transported to the N.C. State Laboratory of Public health in Raleigh, which tested it, Lynch said. Tim Funk
