UNC Charlotte’s Botanical Garden will celebrate 50 years of life Oct. 8 with a daylong symposium that includes a presentation by Amy Stewart, author of “The Drunken Botanist: The Plants That Create the World’s Great Drinks.”

The book includes histories of alcohols created from plants and drink recipes calling for garden-fresh ingredients. “There is a lot of cocktail gardening, and (the book) is a natural extension of that,” Stewart said.

While she doesn’t have a favorite alcohol, she said vermouth is an interesting drink made from wine and includes many interesting plants and herbs depending on the type.

The Botanical Garden started when UNCC founder Bonnie Cone and professor Herbert Hechenbleikner put their minds together to create a ‘living biology class’ according to the university’s website.

“We are trying to reach out more to the public than we may have in the past,” Jeffrey Gillman, director of the garden, said.

Steve Aitken, editor of Fine Gardening magazine, will also be speaking at the event.

The symposium’s regular admission is $99 with lunch being provided, and it will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The day will feature a guided tour of the garden and former director Larry Mellichamp will share the garden’s history.

Anyone interested in attending should visit gardens.uncc.edu/50th-anniversary-symposium/ or call 704-687-0721 by Sept. 26.

Gillman recommends registering before Aug. 31 to get the early bird special of $85.
